The National Fire Protection Association recommends a chimney inspection every year and a sweep whenever creosote reaches 1/8 inch. For most households that burn regularly, that means an annual cleaning — more often if you burn unseasoned wood or use the fireplace daily.

Creosote is a tar-like residue left behind when wood smoke cools inside the flue. It is highly flammable, and a thick buildup is the leading cause of chimney fires. Regular sweeping removes it before it can ignite.

A Level 1 inspection is the annual visual check of accessible areas. A Level 2 adds a video camera scan of the flue and is required when you buy or sell a home, change appliances, or after a chimney fire. A Level 3 is the most in-depth and may involve removing parts of the chimney when hidden damage is suspected.
